Accordion shutters for Galveston homes

Accordion shutters stay on the house and slide closed by hand along top and bottom tracks. Before choosing them, check the space the folded stacks take, the look beside each window and whether you can reach every lock.

How accordion shutters work

Interlocking blades hang in a top track and run in a bottom track. When open, they fold into stacks at the sides of the opening; before a storm, you pull them across and lock them, usually at a central meeting point. Nothing needs to be carried or stored, but every lock must be reachable.

Where they suit a Galveston home

Because they stay in place, they can suit windows and doors on raised homes and second homes. They may suit less well where stacks would block trim, door swings or a view, or where an upstairs lock cannot be reached safely.

Four checks before choosing accordion shutters

Could you close every shutter yourself?

For a raised home, ask for a demonstration of the tracks and locks you will use, including openings behind railings or above stairs. If you live elsewhere part of the year, make sure the person preparing the house can operate them too.

Common questions

Are accordion shutters good for hurricanes?

They can be, when the specific product is evaluated or tested for the opening size and is installed the way it was evaluated. Ask for the documentation for each proposed model rather than relying on the shutter type alone.

Are accordion shutters cheaper than roll-down shutters?

Not necessarily. Price depends on the openings, access and installation work, so compare written quotes for the same opening list.

Can accordion shutters cover sliding glass doors?

Yes, accordion systems are used on doors when the model and layout suit the opening. Ask how the stacks, locks and tracks affect everyday door use and the way out of the house when closed.

Can accordion shutters be closed from inside?

It depends on the model and where it is mounted. Ask the installer to demonstrate how each upstairs or hard-to-reach opening is closed and locked safely.
